Square Pepperoni Pizza Recipe

A square pepperoni pizza is a type of pizza that has a square-shaped crust, rather than the traditional round one, and is topped with pepperoni slices. This style is often associated with certain pizzerias or specific regional pizza traditions.

The square shape is commonly seen in "Sicilian" or "Detroit-style" pizzas, which feature a thick, airy crust and often come in large, party-sized portions. The pepperoni topping adds a flavorful, spicy contrast to the cheese and sauce, making it a popular choice for pizza lovers.

Square pepperoni pizza is not only known for its shape but also for its unique texture and style, which can vary depending on the type of square pizza you're having. For example:

1. Sicilian-Style Square Pizza

This style is often thick, with a fluffy, doughy crust. It typically has a slightly crispy bottom, and the toppings, including pepperoni, are spread evenly on top of the sauce and cheese. The square shape allows for larger slices, which can be a bit more filling due to the thickness of the crust.

2. Detroit-Style Square Pizza

This variation is known for its rectangular shape, thick and airy crust, and crispy edges. The pepperoni slices are often placed under the cheese but on top of the dough, which gives them a crispy texture. Detroit-style pizza often features a more generous amount of cheese, and it’s sometimes topped with a chunky, tangy tomato sauce, either beneath the cheese or as a drizzle on top.

3. St. Louis-Style Square Pizza

While not as famous as the Sicilian or Detroit versions, this style has a thin, cracker-like crust and is often cut into small squares. It usually has a more tangy tomato sauce and uses Provel cheese, which is a processed blend of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone, along with pepperoni or other traditional toppings.

The square shape is often favored for parties, family gatherings, or casual dining because it's easier to slice into uniform pieces, and the crust offers an enjoyable, crispy bite, especially at the edges. Whether it's a Sicilian, Detroit, or other square-style pizza, the pepperoni topping remains a classic favorite for its savory, slightly spicy flavor that complements the rich cheese and tangy tomato sauce.

Making square pepperoni pizza at home is relatively easy, and the result can be delicious. Here’s a simple recipe for a homemade square pepperoni pizza, which you can tailor to your taste.

Ingredients:

For the dough

- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)

- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F or 43°C)

- 1 teaspoon sugar

- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

- 2 tablespoons olive oil

- 1 teaspoon salt

For the toppings

- 1 cup pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)

- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

- 1 ½ cups sliced pepperoni

- Olive oil (for greasing the pan)

Optional seasonings

- Dried oregano, basil, or garlic powder for extra flavor

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough

- In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.

- In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, stirring to form a dough.

- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.

- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

2. Prepare the Pizza Pan

- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).

- Lightly oil a square pizza pan (about 10x10 inches or 12x12 inches) with olive oil. If you don’t have a square pan, you can also use a rectangular one.

- Punch down the dough and stretch it out to fit the pan. Press the dough into the corners to ensure an even layer.

3. Assemble the Pizza

- Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving about a 1-inch border around the edges.

- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce.

- Arrange the pepperoni slices in a single layer on top of the cheese.

- If desired, sprinkle some grated Parmesan and extra seasonings (oregano, basil, or garlic powder) over the pizza for added flavor.

4. Bake the Pizza

- Bake the pizza in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling and slightly browned.

- Check the crust periodically to make sure it doesn’t burn, especially around the edges.

5. Serve

- Remove the pizza from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before slicing.

- Cut the pizza into square slices, and serve hot!

Tips for a Great Square Pepperoni Pizza

- For a crispier crust

- Add extra toppings

Feel free to customize your pizza with additional toppings like mushrooms, bell peppers, olives, or onions.

Enjoy your homemade square pepperoni pizza!
