Easy Triangle Rissoles Recipe

Triangle rissoles are a type of savory snack or meal typically made from minced meat (such as beef, chicken, or lamb) or vegetables, combined with breadcrumbs, herbs, and spices. The mixture is then shaped into triangles, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep-fried or baked until golden and crispy.

These rissoles are popular in various cuisines and are often served as an appetizer, side dish, or main course, accompanied by dipping sauces. They are also a common feature at parties, picnics, or casual gatherings.

Triangle rissoles are versatile and can be customized with a variety of fillings. While the traditional meat-based version is popular, there are also vegetarian and vegan variations, using ingredients like mashed potatoes, lentils, or tofu as a filling.

The key to a successful triangle rissole is the crispy exterior paired with a flavorful, moist interior. To prepare triangle rissoles, the filling is typically seasoned with ingredients like onions, garlic, herbs (parsley, thyme, or oregano), and sometimes cheese or vegetables like carrots or peas.

Once the mixture is shaped into triangles, they can be lightly coated in flour, dipped in beaten egg, and then rolled in breadcrumbs to achieve a crunchy texture when cooked.

They are often served with condiments such as tomato sauce, mayonnaise, or a tangy mustard dip. Triangle rissoles can also be paired with a simple salad or served with rice, making them a versatile and satisfying dish.

Additionally, they are easily stored and can be reheated, making them convenient for meal prep or leftovers. In some cultures, triangle rissoles are also known by different names, such as "croquettes" or "cutlets," but the basic concept of breaded, fried or baked patties with a delicious filling remains the same.

Triangle rissoles are not only delicious but also quite adaptable in terms of flavor and texture. For example:

1. Meat Variations

Common fillings include minced beef, chicken, lamb, or pork. These meats are often mixed with sautéed onions, garlic, and spices such as cumin, paprika, or curry powder for extra flavor. Adding cheese like cheddar or mozzarella can enhance the richness of the filling.

2. Vegetarian and Vegan Options

For a plant-based alternative, mashed potatoes, lentils, chickpeas, or tofu can be used as the main filling. These ingredients are often seasoned with herbs and spices, and for texture, vegetables such as peas, corn, or grated carrots can be added.

3. Filling Ideas

You can also create more sophisticated fillings by combining ingredients like cooked mushrooms, spinach, or roasted vegetables with cheese or even a creamy sauce to make the inside moist and flavorful.

4. Cooking Methods

While deep-frying is the most common method to achieve a crispy exterior, triangle rissoles can also be shallow-fried, baked, or even air-fried for a healthier option. Baking them at a high temperature ensures they get crispy without needing as much oil.

5. Serving Ideas

They can be served on their own as a snack or part of a main meal. For a complete dish, triangle rissoles can be paired with salads, rice, or even served in a wrap or sandwich. Dips like garlic sauce, tzatziki, or sweet chili sauce complement their crispy texture perfectly.

Triangle rissoles are a flexible dish that can be easily adapted to different dietary preferences and can be prepared ahead of time, making them ideal for gatherings, picnics, or family meals. The ability to customize the fillings and cooking method means they can suit various tastes and dietary requirements, from meat lovers to vegetarians and vegans.

Here's a simple recipe for making Triangle Rissoles:

Ingredients:

For the filling

- 500g minced meat (beef, chicken, or lamb) or mashed potatoes (for a vegetarian version)

- 1 small onion, finely chopped

- 2 cloves garlic, minced

- 1/2 cup grated carrot (optional)

- 1/2 cup frozen peas (optional)

- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (for binding)

- 1 egg (for binding)

- 1/2 tsp dried oregano or thyme

- Salt and pepper to taste

- 1 tbsp cooking oil (for sautéing)

For the coating

- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

- 1 egg, beaten

- 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)

Cooking

- Oil for deep frying or shallow frying

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Filling

- Heat a tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic and sauté until softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.

- Add the minced meat (or mashed potatoes for a vegetarian option) to the pan. If using meat, cook until browned and fully cooked through, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.

- If adding grated carrot or peas, stir them in and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

- Add breadcrumbs, an egg, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until well combined. The mixture should be firm enough to hold its shape when formed into patties. If it’s too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs.

2. Shape the Rissoles

- Take a small amount of the mixture and shape it into a small patty or oval. Flatten it slightly to make a triangle shape (you can use your hands or a spoon for this).

- Repeat the process until all the filling is used up.

3. Coat the Rissoles

- Place the flour in one shallow dish, the beaten egg in another, and the breadcrumbs in a third.

- Dredge each triangle rissole in the flour, then dip it into the beaten egg, and finally coat it in breadcrumbs. Press gently to make sure the breadcrumbs stick well.

4. Fry the Rissoles

- Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot (you can test by dropping in a breadcrumb – it should sizzle), carefully add the rissoles to the pan, making sure not to overcrowd them.

- Fry each side for about 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

- Remove from the pan and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.

5. Serve

- Serve the triangle rissoles hot, with a side of dipping sauce like tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, or a tangy mustard sauce.

Tips:

- You can also bake the rissoles at 180°C (350°F) for about 20 minutes or until golden brown if you prefer a healthier option.

- To make them ahead of time, you can freeze the rissoles after coating them in breadcrumbs. When ready to cook, fry directly from frozen.

Enjoy your delicious, crispy triangle rissoles!
