Ingredients:

For the dough

3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 tsp salt

1 cup whole milk

1/4 cup butter, softened

1 egg

For the filling

1/2 cup brown sugar (packed)

1 tbsp ground cinnamon

1/4 cup butter, softened

1/2 cup raisins (or more if desired)

For the glaze (optional)

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1-2 tbsp milk or cream

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

1. Prepare the dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Set aside.

In a saucepan, heat the milk and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and let it cool until it’s warm to the touch (around 110°F or 43°C).

Add the warm milk mixture and the egg to the dry ingredients. Mix together until combined, and then gradually add the remaining 1/2 cup of flour until the dough begins to come together.

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-8 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook to knead the dough.

Once the dough is kneaded, shape it into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

2. Prepare the filling

While the dough is rising, in a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon.

Prepare the raisins by soaking them in warm water for about 10 minutes if you prefer plumper raisins. Drain them before using.

3. Assemble the cinnamon rolls

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface.

Roll the dough into a large rectangle (about 16x12 inches).

Spread the softened butter evenly over the surface of the dough.

Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture evenly over the buttered dough.

Scatter the raisins evenly over the cinnamon-sugar filling.

Starting at one edge of the rectangle, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the seam to seal it.

4. Slice and rise

Slice the rolled dough into 12 equal pieces. Place them in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, arranging them in a spiral pattern with a little space between each roll.

Cover the rolls with a clean towel and let them rise for 30-45 minutes until they have puffed up.

5. Bake

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake the cinnamon rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown on top.

6. Make the glaze (optional)

While the rolls are baking, mix the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl to create the glaze. Adjust the consistency by adding more milk if needed.

7. Finish

Once the cinnamon rolls are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly.

Drizzle the glaze over the warm cinnamon rolls.

Serve warm and enjoy!

Tips:

For extra flavor

You can add chopped walnuts or pecans along with the raisins for added crunch and richness.

Make ahead option

before baking.

Enjoy your homemade cinnamon rolls with raisins! They make a great breakfast, brunch, or dessert.
