Easy Dal With Spinach Recipe

Dal is a term commonly used in Indian cuisine to refer to dried pulses, such as lentils, peas, or beans, that have been split. It can also denote dishes made from these pulses, which are typically cooked with spices and herbs to create a flavorful, nutritious stew.

Dal is a staple in many South Asian diets and is often served with rice or bread. Dal comes in various types, including red lentils (masoor dal), green lentils (moong dal), split chickpeas (chana dal), and pigeon peas (toor dal).

Each type has a unique flavor and texture, and they are used in different dishes. To prepare dal, the pulses are usually soaked to reduce cooking time and then boiled until tender. Spices like turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garam masala are often added to enhance flavor.

The dish might be finished with a tempering (tadka) of heated oil or ghee with spices like mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and garlic, which is poured over the cooked dal for extra depth of flavor.

Dal can be served in a variety of ways: as a main dish with rice or bread (such as chapati or naan), or as a side dish in a larger meal with other components like vegetables, meat, or yogurt. It is valued for its high protein content, making it an essential part of vegetarian diets.

Dal with spinach is a nutritious and flavorful dish combining lentils with spinach, adding both taste and a boost of vitamins. Here's a basic recipe to make it:

Ingredients:

- 1 cup dal (such as moong dal, toor dal, or masoor dal)

- 2 cups fresh spinach leaves, chopped

- 1 onion, finely chopped

- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped

- 2 green chilies, slit (optional)

- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste

- 1 tsp turmeric powder

- 1 tsp cumin seeds

- 1 tsp mustard seeds

- 1/2 tsp garam masala

- 1/2 tsp coriander powder

- Salt to taste

- 2 tbsp oil or ghee

- Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dal

Rinse the dal under cold water. In a pot, add the dal with 2-3 cups of water and a pinch of turmeric. Cook until the dal is soft and fully cooked. You can also use a pressure cooker to speed up this process.

2. Cook the Spinach

In a separate pan, heat some oil or ghee over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add the chopped onions and cook until they turn golden brown.

3. Add Spices

Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and cook for a minute. Then add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they are soft and oil starts to separate. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.

4. Combine Ingredients

Add the cooked dal to this mixture and stir well. Let it simmer for a few minutes.

5. Add Spinach

Add the chopped spinach and cook until the spinach is wilted and well combined with the dal. Adjust the consistency by adding a bit of water if needed.

6. Finish with Garam Masala

Stir in the garam masala and cook for another minute. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.

7. Garnish

Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired. Serve hot with rice or bread.

This dish combines the hearty, comforting qualities of dal with the fresh, vibrant flavor of spinach, making it both tasty and healthy.
