Easy Homemade Pita Bread Recipe

   Pita bread is a type of flatbread that is popular in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines. It is known for its pocket, which forms during baking due to steam causing the dough to puff up. 



This pocket makes pita bread ideal for stuffing with various fillings, such as meats, vegetables, and spreads. The bread is typically made from wheat flour, water, yeast, and salt. 


Pita bread is versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes. It's often used as a wrap or sandwich, similar to a tortilla, and can be filled with ingredients like falafel, gyro meat, or vegetables.

- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (one packet)

- 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)

- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour

- 1 tablespoon olive oil

- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

- 1 teaspoon sugar



Instructions:

1. Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.


2. Mix Dough

-In a large bowl, combine 3 1/2 cups of flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.


-Stir with a spoon or mix by hand until a dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, gradually add more flour until it's manageable.


3. Knead Dough

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic.


4. Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.


5. Shape Pita

Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten into discs about 1/4 inch thick.


6. Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat up. Otherwise, you can use a baking sheet.


7. Bake

Place the rolled-out dough discs onto the preheated pizza stone or baking sheet. Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the pita bread puffs up and is lightly browned.


8. Cool

Remove the pita bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. The bread will flatten as it cools but should still have a pocket inside.
